Affection isn’t a luxury in marriage.

It’s emotional oxygen, and unfortunately, many wives are starved of it.

You can survive without oxygen for a few minutes.

You can’t thrive without it.

Here are seven signs your husband is starving you of affection:

7 Signs Your Husband is Starving You of Affection

1. He only gets affectionate when he wants something

I don’t think there’s any wife out there who only wants to be touched when her husband is in the mood for physical intimacy.

Okay, maybe a few exist. We live in a weird world. 😂

But for most of us women, affection isn’t just a bedroom thing.

We want random hugs in the kitchen, forehead kisses while we’re doing the dishes, a quick hand on our waist as you walk by, holding hands in the car, a kiss before you head out the door….

And yes, even that playful slap on the bum when no one’s watching.

Those little things might not seem like a big deal to guys, but for a lot of us women, they mean everything.

They’re reminders that our husband still wants us.

Unfortunately, lots of husbands aren’t doing these, thereby starving their wives of affection.

2. He acts like affection is unnecessary now that you’re married

If you’re a man who still dates his wife and still does most, if not all, of the things you did to win her over, please come and collect your flowers. 🌹

You’re doing well.

You might be thinking, “Why are you praising me for doing the bare minimum?”

Because if only you knew how many men completely relax the moment they get married!

Some men believe affection belongs to the dating stage, the stage where you’re trying to convince this beautiful woman that you’re the love of her life.

Then once she says, “I do,” it’s “Mission accomplished.”

Who told you the mission ended?

Marriage isn’t the finish line. It’s the starting line.

In fact, your wife needs your affection even more after marriage than she did while you were dating.

Back then, she was wondering if you loved her.

Now she’s wondering if you still do.

Older couples who are still crazy about each other are those who never stop dating.

The mistake many couples make is treating marriage as a destination rather than a relationship that requires constant maintenance.

The flowers shouldn’t stop because she became your wife.

The hugs shouldn’t stop because you’ve been together for ten years.

These are the things that keep love alive long after the honeymoon is over.

3. He gives everyone else warmth except you

Isn’t it heartbreaking to watch your husband be affectionate with everyone except you?

He laughs with his colleagues, hugs people at church, is patient with strangers, and is friendly with the neighbors.

Then he comes home, and it’s like a switch flips.

God help you if your husband is a religious leader. 😩

I’ve heard people say that many pastors’ wives feel lonely.

I know that’s not true for every pastor or ministry leader, so don’t get me wrong.

But I’ve heard enough stories to understand why people say it.

Some men spend all day pouring love, encouragement, and prayers into everyone else, only to return home completely drained.

And it’s not just pastors.

I’ve seen it with CEOs, doctors, business owners, even content creators.

You can get so caught up being available to the world that your spouse ends up living on emotional leftovers.

Your spouse shouldn’t have to compete with the outside world for your best self.

If everyone at work thinks you’re the nicest guy ever, but your wife can’t remember the last time you hugged her just because, you are wrong.

4. He pulls away when you try to be affectionate

So you try to be the bigger person and make the first move.

You go in for a hug, and he gives you that awkward one-arm hug that lasts, like, a second and a half.

You rest your head on his shoulder while you’re watching TV.

A few seconds later, he shifts.

Even when you try to cuddle in bed, he becomes more interested in the edge of the mattress than his own wife.

I get that sometimes people just aren’t in the mood.

We’re humans; we get tired and just want to sleep.

But when your wife keeps reaching out for connection and keeps getting shut down, you are starving her of affection.

Marriage shouldn’t feel like you’re chasing your own spouse just to get a hug.

Your arms should be the safest place for each other.

5. He never says loving words anymore

Words are part of being affectionate.

Yes, the kisses, hugs, cuddles, and touches are important.

But so are the things that come out of your mouth.

Sometimes a simple, “You look beautiful today,” can make a wife’s entire day.

“I love you.”

“I missed you.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you.”

“I appreciate everything you do.”

“You’ve been on my mind all day.”

Those words carry a lot of emotional weight.

We underestimate the power of words because they don’t cost money.

You don’t need to book a vacation or buy expensive jewelry.

Sometimes all your wife needs is to hear that she’s still loved and still appreciated.

Some husbands become CEOs at complimenting everyone except their wives.

“Oh, that’s a nice car.”

“Madam, your dress is beautiful.”

Wonderful.

Now, when was the last time your own wife heard something nice from you?

6. He makes you feel needy for wanting affection

If you haven’t found yourself practically begging your own husband for affection, the subject of “neediness” probably won’t make much sense to you.

But ask wives who have lived through it.

You start by saying, “Can you hug me?”

Then it becomes, “Can we spend some time together this weekend?”

Then, “Can you at least hold my hand?”

Before you know it, you’re asking for things that should come naturally in a loving marriage.

Then comes the response, which is heartbreaking.

“You’re too needy.”

“You always want attention.”

“Can’t you just relax?”

“Why are you so clingy?”

From your own husband!

Marriage is one of the few relationships where you’re actually supposed to need each other, not in an unhealthy, codependent way, of course.

But in a human way.

We all need to feel wanted.

A healthy marriage shouldn’t make you feel embarrassed for wanting to feel loved by your own spouse.

7. He has stopped flirting with you

Some men leave all their flirting skills in the dating stage.

It’s like they packed them in a box after the wedding and threw them in the river.

And then there are the really gifted ones who can charm an entire room.

But somehow, they forget how to flirt with their own wives.

Flirting is one of the cheapest ways to keep a marriage exciting.

It costs absolutely nothing.

A cheeky wink from across the room, a playful text in the middle of the day, pulling her close while she’s cooking just because you felt like it, stealing a kiss before the children interrupt…

Those little moments keep reminding your wife that she’s more than your co-parent.

She’s still your girlfriend.

Marriage shouldn’t become boring just because you’ve been together for years.

There are couples in their seventies who still tease each other like teenagers and newlyweds who already behave like exhausted roommates.

The difference isn’t how long they’ve been married.

It’s how intentional they’ve been.

Gentlemen, don’t stop pursuing the woman you already caught.

She didn’t stop needing romance because she became your wife.

If anything, she needs it even more now.

Marriages don’t stay exciting by accident.

They stay exciting because two people keep choosing to flirt, laugh, play, and fall in love with each other over and over again.
