There are few things lonelier than being ignored by the person whose attention you want the most.

And I don’t even mean grand romantic gestures.

Sometimes, you just want your husband to look up from his phone when you’re talking.

You want him to ask how your day went and wait for the answer.

You want to feel like you’re still a woman he sees, not just the person who lives in the same house, handles responsibilities, raises the children, and reminds him that you’re out of toothpaste.

When that kind of attention disappears for long enough, you start finding little pockets of it elsewhere.

Here are seven places women look for attention when they’re not getting enough of it in their relationships:

When Women Don’t Get Attention at Home, They Often Look for It in These 7 Places

1. Social Media

Many of us are addicted to social media.

God help you if your business needs social media because now you have a legitimate reason to be there.

You open Instagram because you want to reply to a customer, and 45 minutes later, you’re watching a woman you’ve never met organize her refrigerator.

That same social media can become something else entirely when you’re not getting enough attention at home.

It can become the place where you go to feel seen.

Maybe your husband hasn’t complimented you in months, but you post a picture, and suddenly the comments are rolling in.

“Beautiful!”

“You look amazing!”

“How are you getting younger?”

And of course, there is always that one man who takes his assignment very seriously.

“Your husband is a lucky man.” 😂

At first, you may not even think much of it. You just enjoy the compliments.

Who wouldn’t?

But when you’ve been feeling invisible at home, attention hits differently.

So you start posting more pictures of yourself and check who viewed your stories because you miss somebody noticing you.

You miss being reminded that underneath the responsibilities, routines, children, bills, laundry, and everything else life has piled on you, you’re still a desirable woman.

But this is also where you need to be careful because attention can be addictive when you’ve been starved of it.

2. Work

One of the ways I cope with not having my husband around for a long time is by throwing myself into work.

They say an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, and I don’t want to give the devil office space.

So I work.

I write, I create, and come up with new ideas.

I find something productive to occupy my mind instead of sitting around thinking about how much I miss my husband.

That’s one of the reasons I always encourage women to get a life outside their relationships.

Have something that belongs to you.

A career, a business, a passion, a project, just something that gives you a sense of accomplishment and reminds you that you’re a human being outside being someone’s wife.

So when you’re starved of attention at home, work becomes that place for you.

3. Her Friendships

I’ll never understand women who ignore their female friends simply because they got married or entered a serious relationship.

She gets a boyfriend today, and by tomorrow, she has disappeared from the face of the earth.

Messages unanswered, girls’ outings canceled.

Then one day, she texts, “Hey babe, long time.”

Ah. Welcome back. What did he do? 😭

I’m joking, but seriously, I think women need their friendships.

No matter how much you and your husband love each other, you cannot be everything to each other.

And I don’t even think you should try.

There are conversations you can have with your girlfriends that your husband wouldn’t understand in the same way.

Sometimes you don’t need your husband’s opinion.

You need your friend to listen to the entire story, gasp at the appropriate places, ask three follow-up questions, and then say, “Wait. Go back. What did she say after that?” 😂

Female friendships give you companionship, laughter, emotional support, and a sense of belonging that is different from what you get from your marriage.

And when you’re not getting attention at home, you may find yourself leaning into those friendships even more.

The only thing I’d caution against is turning your friendships into an escape from dealing with what’s happening in your marriage.

Your girlfriends can love you, support you, make you laugh, and even help you through a difficult season.

But they cannot fix your marriage for you.

At some point, you still have to go home and have the conversations that need to be had.

4. The Gym

I recently started working out.

Nothing too dramatic. I take walks, do home exercises I find on YouTube, and run on my treadmill.

And everyone, including my husband, is surprised at how committed I’ve been so far. 😂

To be fair, I’m also slightly surprised at myself.

But I’ve discovered that exercising gives you something to focus on.

You set little goals, notice yourself getting stronger, feel proud when you complete a workout you previously struggled with, and generally feel better about yourself.

Now imagine you’re a woman who isn’t getting much attention at home.

The gym can become one of your favorite places, not necessarily because you’re going there hunting for men.

Sometimes you just want to get out of the house, clear your head, work on yourself, and have something in your life that makes you feel good.

You buy cute workout clothes, which can become addictive, by the way. Okay, I speak for myself.

When you start noticing changes in your body, your confidence improves, and you have more energy.

And maybe, for the first time in a long time, you’re doing something purely for you.

But there’s another side to it: People notice you.

Maybe the instructor remembers your name and someone tells you you’re making progress.

You start seeing the same people regularly, exchanging greetings, having little conversations, and becoming part of a community.

And yes, sometimes men notice you too.

Maybe there’s even a man who always smiles when he sees you.

He compliments your consistency and offers to help you with something.

Meanwhile, you go home to a husband who hasn’t told you that you look good since Moses crossed the Red Sea.

Never underestimate how vulnerable you can become to attention when you’re not receiving it from the person you desperately want it from.

Sometimes you’re not even interested in the person giving you attention.

You just love the version of yourself you become around someone who notices you.

And those are two very different things.

5. Her Children

Of course, your children need your attention, especially when they’re young; it feels like they need all of it.

As exhausting as motherhood can be, it’s beautiful to be wanted by your children.

Not getting enough attention from your husband may lead you to unknowingly start pouring more of yourself into your children.

Because with them, you feel needed.

Meanwhile, you are living with a man who barely looks up when you enter the room.

So without consciously deciding to do it, you start building your entire emotional world around your children.

While it’s good to be a present mom, your children should never have to fill the emotional position your spouse has abandoned.

That’s too much weight to put on a child.

You shouldn’t need your son to become the “man of the house” emotionally because you’re lonely in your marriage.

Your daughter shouldn’t become the person you tell intimate details about your problems with her father.

And you shouldn’t hold onto your children so tightly that they begin to feel guilty for growing up, developing friendships, getting married, or building lives that don’t revolve around you.

Because children grow.

That little person who currently wants to follow you everywhere will eventually close their bedroom door and ask you to knock.

They’ll have friends, go to university, may get married, like literally build lives of their own.

If you’ve spent years using motherhood to fill every empty space in your marriage, their independence will leave you facing an emptiness you’ve been avoiding for years.

6. Outings and Social Events

I was at a wedding party two weekends ago with my husband, my BFF, and her husband, and we had the time of our lives.

The music was good.

People were dancing, laughing, taking pictures, spraying money, catching up with friends, and having a great time.

I’m sure many of the people in that room had their personal struggles.

But at that moment, everyone was lost in the bliss of celebrating, dancing, eating, laughing, and just enjoying life.

That’s what outings do for you.

For a few hours, you get to forget what isn’t going right.

Don’t be surprised when you find yourself wanting to go out more because home has stopped being the place where you are happiest.

Because going out gives you something home currently isn’t giving you.

Energy.

For a few hours, you’re not the woman wondering why your husband doesn’t notice you anymore.

You’re just you. Alive, beautiful, social, and having fun.

So, it’s not that you’re addicted to partying.

You’re addicted to how you feel when you’re out.

7. Another Man

Okay, I’m saving the worst for last.

Another man.

And before anybody says, “Well, if she’s unhappy, she should just leave,” yes, ideally, you should deal with the problems in your relationship instead of creating another one.

Being neglected doesn’t give you permission to cheat.

But we’re talking about what can happen, not what should happen.

Sometimes you don’t fall for another man because he’s extraordinary, but for how you feel around him.

Wanted and beautiful.

That’s why emotional affairs can creep up on people.

If you have to delete the conversation, hide the friendship, change his name in your phone, or you’d feel uncomfortable if your husband read your messages, you already know you’re crossing a line.

And your husband’s neglect doesn’t make that line disappear.

I can empathize with a woman who feels lonely in her marriage while still saying that cheating is not the answer.

Two things can be true at once.

Another man’s attention may temporarily make you feel desirable again, but it doesn’t solve what’s happening at home.

Most times, it adds another complicated problem to an already painful one.

Attention sounds like a small thing until you’ve gone without it for a long time.

You can live in the same house with someone, sleep in the same bed, raise children together, pay bills together, and still feel unseen.

And when that happens, you naturally start gravitating toward places where you feel alive again.

So, talk to your husband and tell him what you miss.

Don’t assume he knows.

And if you’re the husband reading this, don’t wait until another person starts appreciating what you’ve stopped noticing.

Familiarity can make us careless.

You see your wife every day, so you assume she already knows she’s beautiful and knows you still want her.

Say it anyway.

Put the phone down sometimes, give the random hugs, tell her she looks good, and listen when she talks.

Women don’t need more attention from the whole world.

We just desperately miss getting it from the man we love.
