One of the hardest things to hear after being cheated on is this:
“But I still love you.”
I’m sure your first reaction iwould be, “No, you don’t. If you loved me, you wouldn’t have cheated.”
It makes sense. Because most of us equate love with loyalty.
If someone truly loves you, surely they wouldn’t betray you in one of the most painful ways possible.
But relationships are rarely that simple.
Can a man genuinely love his wife or girlfriend and still cheat?
Unfortunately…Yes.
Here’s why:
Can a Man Be in Love and Still Cheat?
1. Love and Character Are Two Different Things

One of the biggest mistakes we make is assuming love automatically creates good character.
Nah.
A man can adore his wife and still be dishonest.
He can miss her terribly when she’s away and still sleep with someone else.
Love is an emotion, but faithfulness is a decision repeated over and over again.
They’re connected, but they are not the same thing.
I’ve seen people who loved their families but couldn’t stop gambling.
Others loved their children but couldn’t overcome addiction.
Their love was real, but their character wasn’t strong enough to protect the people they loved.
Cheating often falls into that same category.
A man may truly love you while lacking the discipline and integrity needed to remain faithful.
That’s why you shouldn’t only ask whether someone loves you.
Observe whether they have the character to protect your heart.
Because love without character can become one long apology.
2. He Loves You, But Loves Himself More
Let’s cut the crap. This is usually the most common reason.
The man loves having you.
He loves coming home to you, loves the life you’ve built together, but when temptation shows up, his own desires become more important than your feelings.
That’s selfishness because real love considers another person’s well-being.
A selfish man convinces himself that he’ll enjoy the affair and you’ll never find out.
He’s not thinking about the sleepless nights you’ll have if the truth comes out.
He’s thinking about satisfying himself in the moment.
That’s why many cheating men cry after getting caught.
It’s not because they suddenly discovered they loved their wives.
They always did, but they loved their own pleasure a little more in that moment.
3. He Separates Love From Sex
For many of us women, physical intimacy is emotional.
Even when it starts in the body, it rarely ends there.
You’re not just sharing your body with a man; you’re letting him into a very vulnerable part of you.
This is why many women find casual sex much harder to keep casual than they expected.
But some men are very good at separating sex from love.
A man can sleep with another woman, enjoy it, go home to his wife, kiss her goodnight, and believe the two experiences belong in completely different boxes.
I know. The audacity deserves its own postcode.
This is also why you sometimes hear cheating men say things like, “She meant nothing to me.” blah blah
And the wife is thinking, Do you realize that makes this worse?
Because now you’re telling me you were willing to risk our marriage, destroy my trust, and possibly lose your family over somebody who supposedly meant nothing?
That is not the comforting explanation you think it is.
But it reveals something important.
For some men who cheat, the affair isn’t necessarily about falling in love with another woman.
It may be about novelty, opportunity, validation, or just wanting something different for a moment.
He may still be emotionally attached to his wife and have no intention of leaving her.
None of that makes the cheating less selfish.
You don’t get to break an agreement and then decide the betrayal shouldn’t hurt because “there were no feelings involved.”
“It was just sex” tells you how cheaply someone was willing to gamble something precious.
4. He Never Learned Self-Control
When we say love is not enough to make a marriage work, believe it.
Because a man can love you and still lack self-control and have terrible boundaries.
Unfortunately, marriage will test all of those things.
Being married doesn’t suddenly make other attractive people disappear.
Your husband will meet beautiful women.
Some of them may even be more physically attractive than you.
Just like you will meet handsome men who are more physically attractive than your husband.
You don’t become blind because somebody put a ring on your finger.
The difference is what you do with attraction.
A disciplined man can notice that a woman is beautiful without needing to know whether he has a chance with her.
And he definitely doesn’t keep walking toward temptation while praying, “Lord, give me strength.”
My brother, turn around.
See, self-control is unromantic.
Sometimes, it’s unfollowing someone, ending a conversation, not replying to that 11 p.m. message and putting distance between yourself and someone you’re becoming attracted to before you have a full-blown situation on your hands.
A man who has never learned to deny himself may love his wife and still cheat because every time desire and commitment fight, desire wins.
That is exactly why love alone cannot sustain a marriage.
You also need character because there will be days when feelings are not enough to keep you faithful.
Your values will have to do the job.
5. He Took the Relationship for Granted
It’s shocking to see how many men are shocked that their wives walked away, even with three kids and after fifteen years together.
They thought she would never leave.
Some men cheat because they’ve become too comfortable with their wives’ love.
He knows she loves him and has invested years into the marriage.
Heck, they have children together.
So he thinks she goes nowhere.
Maybe she has even forgiven his affair before, and the foolish man starts mistaking forgiveness for permission, thinking her love has no limit.
Until when she served him with divorce papers.
Then he’s shocked.
But what about the children?
What about everything we’ve built?
She didn’t wake up one morning and decide to throw away her marriage.
You had been chipping away at it for years.
And that’s the danger of taking someone for granted.
You can love something and still become careless with it because you’ve convinced yourself you cannot lose it.
most times, a cheating man doesn’t want another woman instead of his wife.
He wants another woman and his wife.
So, can a man be in love and still cheat?
Yes.
But don’t confuse that answer with accepting betrayal.
Someone loving you doesn’t erase the pain they caused nor does it remove the consequences of their choices.
Healthy love isn’t measured only by feelings, but by the choices someone keeps making when temptation comes knocking.
