Have you ever met someone who looks ten years older than their age?
While genetics certainly plays a role, many of us age ourselves through the little habits we repeat every single day.
Thank goodness, most of these habits are completely within your control.
Looking youthful isn’t about chasing perfection or spending thousands on expensive treatments.
More often than not, it’s about consistently taking care of yourself.
Here are seven habits that are making you look older than your age.
7 Habits That Make You Look Older Than Your Age
1. Never Moisturizing Your Skin (Or Not Moisturizing Enough)
Some weeks ago, I discovered a gem on TikTok that made all those years of doomscrolling feel worth it.
I stumbled across a lifestyle creator sharing one of the “secrets” behind that expensive celebrity glow, and I immediately took notes.
Her method was simple: apply your body lotion first, then body butter, and finally seal everything in with body oil, all while your skin is still damp.
Game changer!
My best friend has been preaching the gospel of moisturizing for years.
She has always said, “Be generous with your moisturizer.”
But that TikTok video finally showed me how to do it properly.
I decided to listen.
Then I took my best friend’s advice a step further and became much more intentional about my face too.
I started using e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Face Cream, and it’s been one of the best skincare purchases I’ve made.
My facial skin feels softer, looks healthier, and has that well-rested glow that makeup alone can never fake.
Dry skin ages you.
Fine lines become more noticeable, and your complexion looks dull.
No, moisturizer won’t erase wrinkles or turn you into a teenager overnight.
But hydrated skin always looks younger than dry, neglected skin.
So if you’re the type that rubs a tiny drop of lotion between your palms and calls it a day, this is your sign to do better.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body.
Treat it like it deserves to be loved.
2. Constantly Looking Stressed and Angry

You can’t tell me your emotions don’t affect the way you look.
They absolutely do.
Have you ever met someone who is always frowning and carrying the weight of the world on their face?
Even if they’re only thirty-five, they look ten years older.
Stress has a way of announcing itself before you ever say a word.
It shows up in the tension around your eyes, the permanent crease between your eyebrows, the tightness in your jaw, and that exhausted expression that tells everyone life has dealt with you.
Yes, life is stressful, and adulting is hard, I know.
But if every single day you’re carrying stress without giving yourself permission to rest, laugh, breathe, or just enjoy life, your face will tell that story.
One thing I’ve become intentional about is protecting my peace.
I don’t care who you are to me.
If your presence constantly fills my life with drama, negativity, or unnecessary chaos, I create some distance.
My peace is too expensive to keep giving it away for free.
And don’t underestimate the power of smiling.
You don’t have to walk around grinning at strangers like you’ve won the lottery.
But laughter and joy soften your face in a way no expensive skincare product ever can.
You can spend hundreds on anti-aging creams, but if you’re constantly angry, bitter, and stressed, your face will still betray you
3. Neglecting Your Sleep

In my twenties, I used to brag about functioning on less than six hours of sleep.
Now, I don’t dare.
If you’re a creative, you know inspiration doesn’t clock in from 9 to 5.
Some of my best ideas have arrived at midnight when normal people were deep in their sleep.
I’d tell myself, “Just one more article…”
Before I knew it, it was 2 a.m.
Then I’d still wake up early because adulthood doesn’t care that you were chasing inspiration.
I’m in my thirties now, and if I don’t get enough sleep, my eyes look tired, and no amount of concealer can fully hide those under-eye bags.
Even on days I dressed well, I somehow looked like I needed a week’s holiday.
Sleep deprivation has a way of stealing your glow before it steals your energy.
Your body does some of its best repair work while you’re asleep.
Your skin recovers, your mind resets, even your mood improves.
Of course, life happens.
If you’re a parent of a newborn, work night shifts, or you’re going through a busy season, you won’t always get the perfect eight hours, and that’s okay.
But if staying up until 2 a.m. every night has become your personality, don’t be surprised if your face starts revealing your habits before your birth certificate does.
4. Never Updating Your Hairstyle or Glasses

I can relate to this one so well because I used to be stubborn about my hair.
For years, I was adamant that I would never wear wigs.
I’m an African woman, and I wanted that to show in my hair.
I loved the idea of rocking my natural hair or braided styles because they felt authentic to me.
My hair was part of my identity.
Well…
Life had other plans.
Years of constant braiding, weaving, and tension finally caught up with my edges.
One day, I looked in the mirror and accepted the truth I’d been avoiding.
My hair needed a break!
So I did the big chop, and I started wearing wigs.
This gave my hair the chance to breathe while allowing me to experiment with different looks without spending hours in the salon or constantly pulling at my edges.
And do you know what?
I actually love it!
I still wear my beautiful African outfits and feel connected to my culture.
Nothing about that has changed.
But my hair game is on another level now.
People who have known me for years keep saying they love the new look, and honestly, so do I.
The biggest lesson for me wasn’t even about wigs.
It was about not tying my identity so tightly to one hairstyle that I became afraid of change.
Sometimes we keep the same haircut, same glasses, same makeup, or even the same wardrobe for fifteen years because it feels safe.
Meanwhile, we’re unintentionally aging ourselves because our look hasn’t evolved while we have.
Your style can evolve without you losing yourself.
5. Not Drinking Enough Water

I’m so guilty of this.
In fact, it’s so bad that my P.A. had to set daily reminders for me to drink water.
A whole grown woman.
That’s because when I’m working, I become completely oblivious to everything else.
I’ll be writing, replying to emails, brainstorming content, and before I know it, it’s 4 p.m. and I’ve survived on just coffee all day.
It’s terrible. Don’t be like me.
We spend hundreds on skincare, serums, and supplements while forgetting one of the simplest beauty habits available to us.
Drink water.
Water isn’t some magical anti-aging potion that’s going to erase wrinkles overnight.
But when you’re consistently dehydrated, your skin looks dull and less plump than it normally would.
These days, whenever my reminder goes off, I reluctantly reach for my water bottle instead of pretending I didn’t hear it.
Do I always succeed?
Absolutely not.
But I’m getting better, and that’s what matters.
6. Smoking and Drinking Excessively

I’m not trying to judge anyone here, but I don’t think there has ever been a point in history where doctors looked at cigarettes and said, “Yes, this is excellent for your health.”
We all know smoking isn’t doing our bodies any favors.
The same goes for excessive drinking.
Beyond the health risks we hear about, both habits tend to show up on your face over time.
And then there’s the lifestyle that often comes with it.
Late nights, poor sleep, not drinking enough water, skipping proper skincare because you got home exhausted.
It all adds up.
If you enjoy the occasional glass of wine or cocktail, this isn’t me coming to snatch it out of your hand.
I’m talking about excess, the kind that becomes a regular habit rather than an occasional treat.
7. Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit Properly
You’ve probably come across some of my posts where I’ve talked about taking a personal styling course.
I must confess, it’s one of the best investments I’ve made this year.
Before that course, I thought style was just buying nice clothes.
If I liked an outfit, I’d wear it.
End of story.
I know better now.
I understand my body shape. I know my skin undertone.
I know which colors make me look radiant and which ones make me look like I haven’t slept in three days.
So these days, I don’t just buy clothes because they’re trendy or because they’re on sale.
I buy what suits me.
Clothes don’t have to be expensive to make you look good.
They just have to fit properly.
The magic is in the fit.
Growing older is a privilege, but looking older than you need to is a matter of habits.
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.
Start with one small change.
Drink an extra glass of water.
Go to bed a little earlier.
Moisturize your skin properly.
Book that hair appointment you’ve been putting off.
Wear the outfit that fits instead of the one you’ve been forcing yourself into.
None of these things will stop the clock.
But together, they’ll help you look more vibrant at every age.
The goal is to look like the happiest version of the age you already are, not to look twenty forever.
