The average human being is selfish.
You.
Me.
Your husband.
Your wife.
Children.
Every single one of us has a selfish streak.
That’s why marriage is so hard.
You take two naturally selfish people, put them under one roof, add bills, children, work stress, and in-laws, then expect them to become selfless.
Good luck with that.
The difference between a healthy marriage and an unhealthy one isn’t that one couple has no selfishness.
It’s that healthy couples recognize it and keep fighting against it.
Unfortunately, not everyone does.
Here are some things selfish wives do every day that slowly damage their marriage:
5 Things Selfish Wives Do Every Day
1. She never admits when she’s wrong or apologizes

One of the things I genuinely admire about my husband is how easily he apologizes.
Not because he’s always wrong.
Far from it.
He values peace more than pride.
Every single time he apologizes, it melts my heart.
And it also makes it so much easier for me to apologize when I’m wrong too.
Apologies beget more apologies. Pride does the opposite.
I’m not saying you should apologize for things you didn’t do just to keep the peace.
But if you know you were wrong…
Sis. Just say, “I’m sorry.”
Those two words won’t reduce your value as a woman.
Some wives would rather write a 10-page thesis explaining why they reacted the way they did than simply admit, “I shouldn’t have done that.”
People who never apologize are exhausting to be married to.
They make their spouse carry the burden of fixing every disagreement.
You cannot have two people who are always right in a marriage.
Someone has to be humble enough to say, “I got this one wrong.”
That’s emotional maturity.
2. She constantly criticizes but rarely appreciates him

I’m not saying you can’t point out your husband’s mistakes.
If he’s doing something that’s hurting you or the marriage, talk about it.
You shouldn’t be pretending everything is fine when it isn’t.
But some wives have turned criticism into their love language.
Nothing their husband does is ever right.
The more someone feels like they can never get it right, the less motivated they become to keep trying.
Appreciation is one of the cheapest and most powerful gifts you can give your spouse.
You don’t have to wait until he becomes the perfect husband before saying, “Thank you.”
Criticism may point out what needs to change, but appreciation reminds someone they’re still valued while they’re changing.
Everyone wants to go where they are appreciated.
Your husband is no different.
3. She expects her husband to meet her needs but ignores his
A big reason many of us get married is that human beings have needs.
No matter how independent, successful, or capable you are, there are needs that marriage is designed to help meet.
If one person could meet every single need on their own, there would be no reason for marriage in the first place.
The problem is when a wife believes only her needs matter.
She expects him to listen when she’s had a hard day, but she tunes out when he wants to talk.
She wants reassurance, affection, compliments, help around the house, and emotional support, yet rarely asks, “How are you doing?”
Marriage cannot survive on one-way care.
Imagine watering only one side of a plant and expecting the whole thing to flourish. It doesn’t work.
A selfish wife wants to be the center of the marriage.
Every conversation circles back to her. Meanwhile, her husband is there, feeling unseen and unheard.
And the thing about many men is they usually don’t complain immediately.
They’ll quietly carry the weight for months or even years before finally admitting they feel neglected.
And when they do, a selfish wife makes it all about her again!
4. She withholds affection to punish or control him

I once wrote a post about what happens when women are starved of affection in marriage, and it ended up becoming one of the most viral articles on my blog.
The comments, especially on Pinterest, were flooded with women saying, “This is exactly how I feel.”
But there were also quite a few men asking, “What about us?”
Fair question.
So I wrote another article about what happens when men are starved of affection too.
Whenever we talk about affection in marriage, the conversation almost always centers on women, and I’m guilty of this too.
Women need hugs, kisses, cuddles, words of affirmation…
Absolutely.
But husbands need affection too, more than many of them are willing to admit.
Every couple has moments when they need space after an argument.
What’s not healthy is turning affection into a weapon.
Some wives know their husband craves a hug, a kiss, holding hands, or simply sitting close to them.
Instead of communicating, they deliberately withhold everything because they want him to suffer and teach him a lesson.
That’s punishment, and punishment has no place in a healthy marriage.
Of course, if you’re deeply hurt, you may not feel affectionate in that moment. That’s understandable.
Nobody expects you to fake intimacy while you’re bleeding emotionally.
But don’t stay there.
Talk, argue if you must, do whatever it takes to deal with the issue.
Just don’t make emotional or physical affection the currency you use to win arguments.
Your husband isn’t your enemy.
5. She dismisses his feelings whenever he opens up

We already know that many men struggle with opening up.
Some were raised to believe that crying is weakness.
Others grew up hearing things like, “Man up,” or “Be strong.”
So by the time they become husbands, many have become experts at swallowing their emotions.
That’s why we should always pay attention when a man finally decides to talk, because for many men, opening up isn’t their default setting.
It’s a huge sign of trust.
Now imagine how heartbreaking it is when he finally lets his guard down, only to hear:
“You’re being too sensitive.”
“That’s not a big deal.”
“Men don’t complain about things like this.”
“Oh please, you’re overreacting.”
Or, my personal favorite…
“You think you’re stressed? Let me tell you what I’ve been dealing with.”
Just like that, the conversation has become about her again.
We complain that men don’t communicate, but sometimes, when they do, we prove to them that opening up isn’t safe.
A selfish wife doesn’t just ignore her husband’s feelings.
She makes him regret having them.
Please don’t be that wife.
You don’t have to agree with everything your husband feels because feelings aren’t always facts.
But they are always real to the person experiencing them.
Sometimes your husband doesn’t need you to fix anything.
He just needs to know that the one person he chose to spend his life with is a safe place for his heart.
If your husband feels safer opening up to a colleague, a friend, or even a stranger than he does to you, that’s a serious warning sign that all is not well with your marriage.
Home should be the safest place for both of you, not just physically, but emotionally too.
If you’ve been reading this list and thinking, “Ouch… I’ve done a few of these,” welcome to the club.
Marriage has a way of exposing parts of us we didn’t even know were there.
I’ve had to confront my own selfishness too.
Your husband has probably had to confront his.
You can’t be a perfect wife because a perfect wife doesn’t exist.
The goal is to become a little more self-aware and a little more intentional than you were yesterday.
The beautiful thing about marriage is that it’s one of the few relationships where two imperfect people get the chance to keep choosing each other and becoming better together.
So don’t read this list to beat yourself up.
Read it to check your heart.
And if you recognize one of these habits in yourself, don’t feel condemned.
Decide that today is a good day to love your husband a little better.
And you’ll see that little changes repeated every day can completely transform a marriage.
