6 Signs You Should Separate From Your Husband

6 Signs You Should Separate From Your Husband

One of the most dangerous pieces of marriage advice I have ever heard is that marriage is not a bed of roses.

The advice itself is true.

Marriage is not a bed of roses, I mean, nobody marries another human being and lives happily ever after without misunderstandings and seasons that test their patience.

The problem is that some people use that statement to explain away things that should never be normal.

Every marriage has problems, but not every marriage destroys your peace and dignity.

If you are wondering whether your marriage has crossed the line from difficult to unhealthy, here are some signs you should take seriously.

6 Signs You Should Separate From Your Husband

1. He is physically abusive

This has to come first because it is one of the most dangerous.

A husband should never be your greatest threat.

The man who promised to love and protect you should not be the reason your children are trembling in their bedrooms.

He should not be the reason you are covering bruises with makeup or lying to people about how you got injured.

If your husband is hitting you, there is no level of submission or being a better wife that will make physical violence acceptable.

One of the saddest things abuse does is convince women that they deserve it.

“He was just angry.”

“I shouldn’t have said that.”

“He has been under pressure lately.”

“I provoked him.”

No.

A grown man is responsible for his actions, and being angry is not an excuse for violence.

Many women stay because they believe he will change.

Some do, but many don’t.

Please don’t gamble with your life waiting to find out which category your husband belongs to.

Leave to live.

I know leaving is not simple.

There are children, finances, and a whole architecture of reasons that make walking away feel impossible.

But your life is worth more than any marriage.

2. He is serially unfaithful and completely unbothered by it

Infidelity is complicated territory, and I want to be careful here.

Some couples survive affairs.

It is painful, and the road back is long, and not everyone can walk it, but it is possible when both people want it badly enough and are willing to do the work.

What I am talking about here is a husband who cheats consistently, without remorse, and without any genuine intention to stop.

He treats his wedding vows as suggestions, comes back each time with just enough of an apology to buy more time, and then does it again.

That man is not struggling with a mistake. He is maintaining a lifestyle.

A wife who stays in a marriage with a serially unfaithful husband who has shown no evidence of change is not being faithful to her marriage.

She is being faithful to her own suffering because do you know what chronic infidelity does to a woman?

If you don’t, I’ll tell you.

Let’s start with the physical risks.

Many women have contracted sexually transmitted infections from husbands they trusted.

Imagine being faithful to one man while he is exposing you to diseases he picked up elsewhere.

The betrayal is bad enough, and the health consequences are devastating.

The emotional damage is even worse.

Living with a serial cheater will make you question your beauty, value, sanity, and sometimes even your worth as a woman.

You become a detective instead of a wife, checking phones, stories, and locations, and wondering whether this month’s apology will last longer than last month’s.

Trust can survive many things, but it cannot survive being deliberately murdered over and over again.

3. He constantly tears you down with his words

I know people like to say, “They’re just words.”

No, they’re not.

Words shape how people see themselves.

A husband who constantly insults you, humiliates you, mocks you, and attacks your self-worth will damage you.

“You are useless.”

“You are lucky I married you.”

“No other man would want you.”

“You can’t do anything right.”

“You are terrible in bed.”

“You brought me bad luck.”

“You are skinny and ugly.”

“Your parents did a bad job.”

The scary thing about verbal abuse is that it happens so gradually that you stop noticing it until one day you realize you’re no longer the confident woman you used to be.

Because his voice has become your inner voice.

Even when he’s not around, you continue saying terrible things to yourself.

A husband should not be your biggest bully.

Disagreements are normal in marriage.

Cruelty is not.

4. You are carrying the entire marriage alone

This one doesn’t look like a reason to leave from the outside, as there’s no violence or infidelity.

Just one person doing everything and one person doing nothing, and the person doing everything running out of herself.

You manage the home, the children, provide financially, suggest counseling, read the books while he coasts comfortably on the life you are building and maintaining largely by yourself.

And you have told him multiple times in different ways, and nothing has changed.

I am not saying to leave immediately because your husband forgot to do the dishes, but a marriage where one person does everything alone is not the will of God.

It’s as good as being married to yourself.

5. Your well-being keeps deteriorating because of the marriage

10 Signs You Should Separate From Your Husband

A few years ago, a family friend told my husband and me she was taking medication for high blood pressure because of the stress she endured in her marriage.

The older I get, the more I realize that the body keeps score.

What affects your mind eventually affects your body.

This woman is divorced now, and she told us that no amount of begging, promises, counseling, family interventions, or reconciliation attempts would ever convince her to go back.

Because she finally got her health back, and she wasn’t willing to lose it again.

That conversation opened my eyes.

Sometimes people think a toxic marriage only affects your emotions.

It doesn’t. Your physical health suffers too.

Every marriage will have stressful seasons.

My husband and I have had difficult seasons. Most married couples have.

What is not normal is a marriage that consistently leaves you emotionally drained, mentally exhausted, and physically unwell with no sign of improvement.

A marriage should not require you to sacrifice your health on the altar of commitment.

If your well-being is steadily deteriorating because of your marriage and every sincere attempt to address the issues has failed, you need to take that seriously.

Your vows did not require you to destroy yourself.

6. There are patterns he refuses to address, and they are destroying you

10 Signs You Should Separate From Your Husband

I once read about a woman who spent years covering her husband’s gambling debts.

She took loans and sold things, and went into debt trying to save a man from a problem he refused to acknowledge.

By the time she finally said enough, she had nothing left to give and was financially devastated and starting over from scratch.

She said she wished she had left earlier because she finally understood that loving someone is not the same as being responsible for saving them from themselves.

Some men have addictions.

Others have patterns of behavior like financial irresponsibility, rage issues, and other destructive habits that they are unwilling to address and that are actively dismantling the marriage and the family.

Some wives stay because they believe that love means absorbing the consequences of someone else’s refusal to change.

Well, love means wanting the best for someone.

It does not mean destroying yourself to give them what they should be building themselves.

If there is a pattern in your marriage that your husband refuses to take responsibility for, and it is costing you in every way, that is a decision he is making every day.

And you are allowed to make a different one.

Separation is not a small thing, and I am not throwing it around lightly.

Before you make any major decision, exhaust the options available to you.

Seek counseling, individually first, then together if he is willing.

Talk to someone you trust.

Pray if you are a person of faith and give the process a genuine chance.

But don’t stay in a dangerous situation for any reason.

Some marriages can be saved, and some women need to be saved from their marriages.

Know which one you are in.

You are not a bad wife for choosing your life.

You are a woman who finally decided she deserved one.

3-6 did it for me. I share this because this is my 2nd marriage, my 1st was mentally, physically and emotionally abusive for 14 yrs. I left that marriage with 4 young children and I worked hard to get myself in a good place. This second marriage was not physically abusive but it was mentally and emotionally abusive which doesn’t make much of a difference it still hurts just as much. This was a no brainer, after 4 yrs I was done. It’s not easy because you build a life you thought was going to be a forever life. But disrespect should never make you question whether to stay or go. If you mentioned that what was said and done hurt you and it continues, then he’s never going to change. Your mental, physical health and peace of mind is your priority period. God has something better, have faith, trust and believe you will be ok without them.

my husband cheated in 2016 I was in a major depression I literally could not deal with the infidelity. fast forward to 2020 I was finally in a place where I could deal with the affair it's a long story suffice it to say molested at 17 so my emotional growth especially with men was stuck at 17... I had an awareness come over me one day sitting on my on my couch every wrong thing I had done everything I shouldn't have put up with hit me o5 seconds so I went from 17 to 53 that day I was furious with myself for many reasons. When my husband got home from work that day I went off about everythingthe affair the talking down to me the contempt he has shown towards me ect... he didn't know what hit him I do feel like that had a lot to do with him starting the affair again. Before I basically worshiped the ground he walked on and now felt the need to tell him the things that hurt me or that I felt were inappropriate, a month later he contacted her and the affair is still going today . I have researched going over everything out there on the internet his phone i have passwords passnwords to some of his accounts (he has said verbally it's ok for me to look) what I have found is disturbing she is all over his phone her address her phone number her pictures there is even a Google photo album entitled ME that he shared on social media with her picture in it but not mine he told me he has hundreds of pics of me and only a few if her. He gaslights me constantly saying that everything i have found is not real and that he is not doing what I am accusing him of however all of the evidence his energy towards me his actions that say he could careless about loosing me and my intuition telling me it is infact happening after 10 years of this (really 5 years since 2020) i have separated been out of the house for over a year but continued see him but the abuse continued i have finally made the decision that it's over. He is telling me that I am being a child that I am hallucinating and threatening to go to my family. I will not go back. What can I do. He has never been physically abusive but emotionally abusive even though I know this sometimes I still question myself.

What if your husband hasn't touched you in over 14 years due to a porn addiction. He won't seek help, won't communicate, and won't do anything to give it up. I've been nothing but faithful, never thought about cheating, but within the last 6 years when everything came out in the open, cheating is very tempting. I don't want to come out looking like the bad guy, and I would. Our relationship is no more then being roommates. I have gotten to the point I don't even care anymore. I don't even care about his porn addiction. There are too many men that would give anything to be where he is. I already have one that would marry me today, if my husband were out of the way. The only thing keeping me in this mess is my fear of God. Any suggestions?

#1, Why would you come out looking like the bad guy? If he's got a porn addiction, yet hasn't had sex with you in 14 years, that's weird. If YOU Already have a Man on the "hook" that will marry you and you're confident of that fact then let's face it, you're already sleeping with this guy, so you're not exactly ummm without blame here honey. There isn't any where on this planet that you aren't without blame here ok? Because there's simply ZERO way that you have the knowledge about all of these men you have on the "hook" unless you haven't been tossing out the "bait" ok? So, Just go ahead and admit it and move along with your life, You are done, you're no longer interested, stop with your "pissing match" about whose fault it is and just move on. You're not fooling anyone, and I promise you if I as an utter complete stranger have figured out your BS, I assure you that the people who know you best DEFINATELY know what is going on.

@Carla, set yourself free Carla! If he is unwilling to work on it then what options are you left with? You can’t fix the marriage by yourself. Life is too short to be that miserable. Good luck!
