When a Man is Done With The Marriage, He Does These 5 Things Silently

There’s a new series on Netflix called The Polygamist, and while watching it, I couldn’t stop thinking about how some marriages fall apart.

The story follows a man who has been married to his wife for twenty years.

Twenty freaking years!

A supportive wife, a successful career, and children.

The kind of woman who sacrificed and helped him build the life he now enjoys.

Then came a younger woman at his workplace, and what started as temptation became an affair.

And before long, this man was making decisions that threatened everything he had spent two decades building.

Watching it reminded me that most marriages don’t collapse the day someone leaves.

They start falling apart long before that, until the marriage stops feeling like something worth protecting.

Here are some things men often do when they are emotionally done with their marriage.

When a Man is Done With The Marriage, He Does These 5 Things Silently

1. He stops trying to resolve conflicts

Last week, my husband and I had a fight that lasted for days, in fact, almost a week.

Which is not exactly ideal when you’re already living apart temporarily.

Long-distance marriage is hard enough without adding a disagreement on top of it.

The distance was straining us, feelings were hurt, and words were said.

Neither of us was particularly impressed with the other.

Now, what’s the point of this story?

Despite everything, we still wanted to fix it.

On the final day of that disagreement, we spent about two hours on a video call talking things through.

I said my bit. He said his.

We explained where we were coming from.

We apologized and took responsibility for our part in the problem.

Most importantly, we discussed how to prevent the same issue from happening again.

Because that’s what people do when they still care about the relationship.

They may get angry or even avoid each other for a few days.

But eventually, they come back to the table because the marriage still matters to them.

A man who is done with his marriage will not do that, even when you try to initiate conversation, you hear things like:

“Whatever.”

“Do what you want.”

“I’m tired of talking about it.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

He no longer cares enough to find a solution because he’s done.

2. Physical affection disappears without discussion or explanation

There’s a post on this blog that has been read by thousands of women called “10 Things That Happen When a Woman Is Starved of Affection.”

The response to that article was overwhelming because it was relatable.

Even on Pinterest, comments were filled with women saying things like:

“This is exactly how I feel.”

“I thought I was the only one.”

“You just described my marriage.”

Affection matters more than many people realize, and it’s not just physical intimacy, but also the everyday affection that keeps a marriage feeling warm.

Like the hugs, kisses, hand-holding, playful touches when you walk past each other, arm around your shoulder while watching television, and random forehead kiss that serves no practical purpose except saying, “I still love you.”

When a man is all in in his marriage, those things usually happen naturally, not with movie-level romance, but they happen.

And when a man is done with the marriage, these things disappear as well without conversation or explanation.

One day you just realize you cannot remember the last time he touched you.

3. You no longer talk like before

I’m sure you’ve heard a million times that no relationship can survive without communication.

The older I get and the longer I’m married, the more I realize that’s true.

As I’m writing this, it’s just after 9 a.m.

My husband, who’s temporarily away, has already called because he wanted to see my face.

I told him I’d call him back because I was driving.

A couple of hours before that, I had sent him a video message of me taking a morning walk after months without exercising.

That’s what happens when you’re connected to someone.

You don’t just share the big news, you share the small things too.

Your random thoughts, an annoying customer, the funny thing your child said, the picture of the food you made.

You talk because you enjoy each other’s company, and this person is your person.

A man who is done with his marriage will only communicate when necessary.

Even when you try, he’ll act like you are bothering him or even snap at you.

Communication isn’t just about exchanging information.

Google can do that.

Communication in marriage is for maintaining connection and bonding.

If your husband doesn’t want to bond with you through communication, there is trouble in paradise.

4. You are seeing signs of cheating

Most men rarely quit their marriage just to stay single.

Usually, there’s someone else waiting in the wings.

Not every unhappy husband is cheating, and not every man who cheats is done with his marriage.

Some cheaters are unfortunately very committed to keeping both women.

What I’m talking about here is a husband who has mentally checked out of the marriage and started investing his energy elsewhere.

One reason cheating appears in situations like this is that affairs create an escape.

Instead of fixing the problems at home, he distracts himself with excitement elsewhere.

And because he knows infidelity is a deal-breaker for many women, he might become surprisingly careless because a part of him wants to get caught.

I know that’s a strong statement, but I’ve seen it happen.

Some men reach a point where they are too cowardly to leave but too checked out to stay properly.

They don’t have the courage to sit their wife down and say, “I don’t think I want this marriage anymore.”

They don’t want to be the villain who files for divorce.

So they start behaving in ways that practically force their wife to make the decision for them.

He might leave his phone where messages can be easily seen and spend more time away from home…

You know, the classic sighs of cheating.

He’s hoping you’ll connect the dots and do the dirty work on his behalf.

That way, he gets to tell himself that you ended the marriage. Not him.

Again, this isn’t every cheating husband.

Some are Olympic-level liars who will deny the truth even as they stand beside it.

But when a man is emotionally done with his marriage, cheating is less about passion and more about escape.

5. He starts grooming you for a divorce

I have an entire article on this topic because it happens more often than people realize.

Divorce rarely starts with paperwork. It starts with preparation.

A man who has decided he is done with the marriage will begin laying the groundwork long before he officially leaves.

He will rewrite the history of your marriage in a way that casts him as the victim and you as the villain.

The good years and sacrifices you made will disappear from the story.

All that’s left is a carefully edited version of events designed to justify what he already wants to do.

Unfortunately, many women don’t realize what’s happening.

They think they’re going through normal marital problems when, in reality, their husband has already started mentally preparing for an exit.

He’s not trying to rebuild the marriage; he’s building a case against it.

That’s why I always tell women to pay attention to patterns.

A husband who wants to save a marriage looks for solutions.

The one who is preparing to leave will spend his time gathering evidence for why he should.

If you’ve noticed some of these signs in your marriage, please don’t panic.

Marriage is complicated, and people go through stressful seasons.

One sign alone doesn’t mean your husband is done with the marriage.

What matters is the pattern and whether he still wants to fight for the relationship.

Because that’s the real difference.

Many marriages have come back from places that looked hopeless, but none of that happens accidentally.

It happens when two people decide the marriage is still worth fighting for.

So, talk to your husband about what you’ve been feeling.

Tell him you need to know if he’s still in this or if you’re fighting alone.

A man who still wants his marriage will hear that and come back to you.

And a man who doesn’t?

*Sighs*
