Experiencing tough times is part of our existence. As unfortunate as that sounds, it’s just the fact.

So, at this point, the solution is not seeking ways to avoid experiencing tough times because that will be an exercise in futility. Thankfully, we also experience good times, so it is not all bad.

If we don’t handle the tough times properly, we might not be in the good frame of mind to enjoy the good times.

Therefore, what we should be seeking are ways to go through tough life situations without breaking down or losing our minds.

How then can we get through tough times without breaking down?

Here are 10 tips to help you get through tough times:

How to Get Through Tough Life Situations without Breaking Down

1. Acknowledge and accept the situation

One of the mistakes many people make when faced with a tough situation is to try to deny it and refuse to acknowledge it. They erroneously believe that if they deny it, the problem will disappear.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Denying a problem doesn’t make it go away, it only makes the problem fester and you might be forced to deal with it when it has compounded.

So, it is better to acknowledge the problem, so you can start developing a solution.

2. Develop a solution to get out of the situation

Okay, there is a problem. What next? There is a popular saying advising against worry that states that, “worry is like a rocking chair; it keeps you busy but takes you nowhere.”

I needed to put that out there first, so you do not think I am talking about worrying about the problem.

The difference between what I am suggesting and worry is that worry makes you fret and dwell on the problem while trying to develop a plan makes you look at the problem critically and see how you can get out of it.

This will entail being honest with yourself, being positive and trying to come up with a solution.

3. Accept what you can change and let go of what you can’t

While trying to develop a solution to the problem; you might find that there are certain situations you might not be able to change, especially as it relates to other people or your past.

Don’t waste time on anything you can’t change; the truth is that even though life is full of ups and downs, life also has a way to taking care of certain things if we have the right attitude.

So focus only on what you can change and leave the one you can’t change.

4. Stay positive

One of the best ways to go through tough life situations without breaking down is staying positive.

It can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel when life is tough and you are experiencing different problems.

But if you can get past the problem and remember that you are not alone and the problem is just for a while, you will be better off for it.

And indeed, the problem is just for a while; it will pass, just hang in there.

5. Be around loved ones

There is a certain level of energy and inspiration that comes with being around people who love us.

Being around people who care for you who will encourage you and make you feel better about the situation and yourself has an amazing effect on your well-being.

Some people make the mistake of shutting out the people that care about them when they are faced with a problem when they should be gravitating towards them to get some much-needed display of love.

While a period of solitude might help you to meditate and think up possible solutions, you shouldn’t totally shut out people who want to be there for you.
Life is all about creating a balance.

6. Seek help

There is nothing to be ashamed of if you feel you need professional help because you are overwhelmed.

Sick people are never ashamed to see the doctor; however, people who need therapy are sometimes made to feel ashamed for needing help.

At the end of the day, it is your well-being that matters; don’t let naysayers stop you. If you need help, please seek help.

7. Learn from it

In most cases, there is a lesson to learn from whatever situation life throws us, whether good or bad.

It could be something we need to do, something we need to stop doing, certain people we need to draw closer. Really, it could be a wide-range of things.

Pick the lesson life is trying to teach you, so you can come out of that situation better.

8. Do something that makes you happy

This could be a good time to stay away for a while and get a much-needed vacation or just do something that makes you happy.

It doesn’t matter how silly it sounds, as far as it makes you happy and you are not hurting anyone, then you should definitely do it.

As a matter of fact, things that make you happy could be as simple as watching your favourite TV series, listening to music, swimming, looking through your photo albums, playing your favourite sports etc.

If you also have a bucket list of activities you have always wanted to try, you could also take advantage of this time to do some of them. This will take your mind off the problem and feel your heart with happiness.

9. Help people

There is something about helping people that just fills us with joy.

I guess the best explanation I can come up with is that God created us to be interconnected and making someone else happy just automatically makes us happy.

Smiles are contagious. So, since you need to smile, then you should definitely make someone smile.

10. Be thankful for the good things

We all have good things in our life. It might be hard to believe sometimes but whatever you are going through, there’ll always be a ray of light in the darkness.

All you have to do is take a look around you and look back as well; you will see that you have many reasons to be thankful.

When life is tough, one great way to handle is to be thankful for the life you have and remain hopeful that it will get better.

Life comes with its ups and downs, but we cannot stop fighting and trying to survive when life throws its usual curveballs. Stay positive, keep the faith and it is only a matter of time before everything sorts itself out.
